This is a video double lumen and bronchial blocker simulator.

Recognizing correct DLT placement can be challenging for residents and even some attending physicians, particularly due to the scarcity of teaching cases involving DLTs compared to regular ETTs. The presence of an impatient surgeon can further impede the visual processing of bronchoscopic images.

A new DLT simulator has been developed to provide learners with an immersive environment free from the usual constraints, allowing ample time to master this critical skill. The simulator features a basic control set that enables users to insert, remove, adjust the viewable lumen, and confirm the position of the DLT at their own pace. Real-time feedback on performance is provided.

The simulator offers a structured educational program starting with a comprehensive bronchoscopy examination. Users can observe both correctly and incorrectly positioned DLTs before progressing to 10 simulations, including bronchial blocker positioning. Initial simulations guide users through the precise movements required to correctly position and confirm the left-sided DLT. Subsequent simulations offer increased autonomy in maneuvering the device. The video footage consists of authentic bronchoscopy images, replicating the visual experience in an actual operating room setting.

The development process involved meticulous efforts in capturing and editing video images and devising an intelligent simulator that accommodates the various choices involved in manipulating the DLT. The end product stands as the first bronchoscopy simulator that authentically simulates the procedural intricacies of bronchoscopy, enabling independent practice in performing examinations and handling DLTs or blockers.
